Tattoo Care
A little care in the first few weeks makes a big difference in how your tattoo heals and ages.
In the first 24 hours
- Keep the original bandage on for the time your artist recommends before gently removing it.
- Wash your hands before touching the area, then clean it gently with mild, unscented soap and lukewarm water.
- Pat dry with a clean towel — do not rub.
First 2–3 weeks
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, tattoo-safe moisturizer 2–3 times a day.
- Avoid swimming pools, the ocean, and long soaks in the bath until fully healed.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, and always use sunscreen once healed to protect the color long-term.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo to reduce friction and sweat buildup.
- Don't pick or scratch at scabs — let them fall off naturally.
Still traveling? A few extra tips
- Flying home soon? Swelling and healing settle faster on the ground — if possible, build in a day or two before a long flight, especially for larger pieces.
- Hanoi's heat and humidity can make you sweat more than you're used to — pat the area dry through the day and stick to breathable fabrics.
- Motorbike exhaust and street dust in the Old Quarter are a real thing — keep the tattoo loosely covered when riding or walking through traffic in the first few days.
- Carry a small, fragrance-free moisturizer with you if you're continuing on to other stops in Vietnam or Southeast Asia.
This is general guidance — always follow the specific instructions your artist gives you after your session. If you notice signs of infection (increasing redness, swelling, pus, or fever), seek medical attention.
