Is There a Minimum Age to Get a Tattoo in Vietnam?

Is There a Minimum Age to Get a Tattoo in Vietnam?

This is a genuinely fair question to have before booking, and the honest answer is a bit more nuanced than a single number. Here’s what’s actually true, rather than what sounds tidy.

Vietnam doesn’t have a single, clearly codified national law that specifically regulates the tattoo industry the way some countries do — there’s no dedicated tattoo statute spelling out a minimum age, licensing requirements, or consent rules written just for tattooing. What exists instead is general age-of-majority practice: 18 is treated as adulthood under Vietnamese civil law, and that’s the age most studios — including this one — actually work from as their real-world standard.

What this means practically:

  • 18 is the de facto standard across the reputable end of the industry, even though it isn’t spelled out in a tattoo-specific law the way it might be in your home country.
  • Enforcement varies studio to studio. Because there’s no dedicated law creating a uniform requirement, how strictly a studio checks age comes down to that individual studio’s own standards — which is worth treating as a genuine signal when you’re evaluating a place, alongside things like hygiene and sterilization practices.
  • This is one more reason the cheapest, least careful studios are worth being cautious about — a place that doesn’t bother asking about age is often the same kind of place cutting corners elsewhere too.

What to bring as a foreign visitor

If you’re traveling in Vietnam, your passport is the practical answer — it’s the ID you’re expected to be carrying as a non-citizen anyway, and it’s what a studio will realistically ask to see to confirm your age. Don’t expect a foreign driver’s license or a photo of an ID to necessarily be treated the same way; bringing the actual passport is the simplest way to avoid any awkwardness at the consultation.

What to expect at GOAT Tattoo Studio

We work from the same 18-and-over standard as the rest of the reputable industry here, and we’ll ask to see ID — your passport is the easiest option if you’re visiting from abroad. If you’re unsure whether this affects your specific situation, it’s a completely reasonable thing to ask about when you reach out to book.
