Should You Tip Your Tattoo Artist in Vietnam?

This comes up a lot from first-time visitors, and the honest answer doesn’t fit neatly into either “always tip” or “never tip” — here’s what’s actually normal.

The honest short answer

Tipping isn’t a hard rule anywhere in Vietnam, and that holds for tattoo artists specifically — it’s genuinely appreciated, not expected, which is a real difference from countries like the US where tipping service workers is closer to a social obligation. You won’t cause offense either way, and no reasonable artist will treat a client differently based on whether they tip.

What actually happens in practice

For personal services broadly in Vietnam — hairdressers, spa and massage staff, and by extension tattoo artists — a small discretionary cash tip is common when a client feels the service was especially good, but it’s genuinely optional rather than a built-in expectation the way it can be elsewhere. This is different from restaurant tipping norms in heavily touristed parts of Hanoi, which have their own separate (and also optional) conventions.

If you do want to tip, roughly how much

There’s no fixed percentage the way there might be for a restaurant bill — the general pattern people follow is a modest, round cash amount rather than a strict percentage of the session price, especially for a longer or more involved sitting. Handing it directly and discreetly, in Vietnamese dong, is the normal way it’s done, more so than adding it to a card payment. If you’re unsure what feels right for the length and complexity of your session, it’s genuinely fine to just ask the studio directly rather than guess.

What this actually means for your decision

Don’t feel obligated going in, and don’t feel like you’re being rude if you don’t — the honest reality is that whether or not you tip has no bearing on how you’ll be treated during or after your session. If you had a great experience and want to show it, a small tip is a genuine, appreciated gesture; if you don’t, that’s completely normal too.
