Best Time of Year to Visit Hanoi for a Tattoo

If your Vietnam trip dates are still flexible, Hanoi’s weather genuinely varies enough across the year to be worth factoring into when you plan your tattoo, separate from the broader question of timing it around your itinerary.

The two real seasons

Hanoi runs on a hot, humid wet season roughly May through September, and a cooler, drier season roughly November through March, with April and October as transition months in between.

• November–March (cool, dry season): highs generally 20–25°C, noticeably lower humidity than the rest of the year, and the least rainfall. This is genuinely the most comfortable stretch for sitting through a long session and for healing in general — less sweat, less humidity working against a fresh tattoo.
• May–September (hot, wet season): highs commonly 33–35°C with humidity often in the 80% range, and August in particular tends to bring the heaviest rainfall of the year. This is the toughest stretch for both comfort in the chair and for keeping a fresh tattoo consistently clean and dry during healing.
• April and October: the shoulder months — warming up or cooling down, with moderate humidity and rainfall that’s easing rather than peaking. A reasonable middle ground if the cooler season doesn’t fit your travel dates.

Why this actually matters for a session, not just sightseeing

A long sitting is more physically demanding in heat and high humidity — more sweating, more discomfort holding still, and a fresh tattoo that has to fight sticky, humid air from hour one instead of a controlled environment. None of this makes summer a bad time to get tattooed, plenty of people do it, but it’s worth knowing you’re working against tougher conditions rather than being caught off guard by it.

If your trip falls in the wet season anyway

• Plan air-conditioned time into the days right after your session — it genuinely helps with both comfort and keeping the area drier while it’s most vulnerable.
• Expect to be more deliberate about aftercare, not less careful — the humidity-specific healing guidance matters more, not less, in the wettest months.
• Build in a little schedule flexibility if you can — August’s heavier rain can occasionally affect a day’s plans city-wide, tattoo appointment included.
