Rib & Side Tattoo Price & Pain Guide — Hanoi
Published August 26, 2026

Ribs and the side of the torso are a genuinely popular placement — a vertical script, a floral branch trailing down the side, a whale or compass tucked along the bone — but it’s also a spot people consistently underestimate going in. Here’s what actually drives the price and what to realistically expect once you’re in the chair.
How much does a rib or side tattoo cost?
Small rib pieces — a short line of script, a compact symbol, a single flower — usually fall under our 30-minute mini rate, from $36. Anything that runs the length of the ribs, wraps toward the side or back, or includes shading or color rather than pure line work is billed at our standard $77/hour instead.
What actually changes the quote:
- How much of the rib cage the design covers — a 3cm symbol and a piece that runs from underarm to waist are very different amounts of chair time, even at similar line weight.
- How still you can hold the position — this placement is physically harder to keep steady for than a flat area like the forearm, and that affects how efficiently a session runs.
- Whether it’s one side or both — a matching or mirrored design on both sides is quoted as two separate pieces, not a single combined session.
Why ribs are one of the most painful placements
This is genuinely one of the placements pain charts rate highest, often 8–9 out of 10, sometimes reported as the most painful spot on the body for a given person. Three things compound here: the skin sits thin and close to bone with very little muscle or fat to cushion the needle, the intercostal nerves in this area are sensitive, and — unlike almost anywhere else on the body — your skin is physically moving with every single breath throughout the session. That last part is worth knowing in advance: it’s not something you can simply hold still through the way you might on your arm or leg.
What actually helps this placement heal well
- Breathing keeps stretching the fresh tattoo, so don’t expect it to sit still while healing — normal breathing movement is fine and won’t damage the piece, but it’s part of why ribs can feel more tender during the first few days than a flatter placement would.
- Watch for waistband and bra-band friction, especially on lower rib or side placements — loose-fitting clothing for the first couple of weeks reduces rubbing directly over healing skin.
- Sleeping position matters more here than for most placements. Lying directly on a fresh side or rib tattoo adds pressure overnight — sleeping on the opposite side or on your back is generally easier while it heals.
- Smaller pieces tend to be more comfortable overall than large, dense ones, simply because there’s less total time in a position that’s already harder to hold still in.

We’ll walk through realistic pain expectations and session pacing with you at the consultation stage, including breaks if a longer rib piece needs them — this isn’t a placement where pushing through discomfort produces a better result. Every session uses single-use needles and sterile equipment, and you’ll have a confirmed price before any tattooing starts.
